costume party

Tomoki isn’t one for dressing up, anything outside of his usual shirts aren’t something he bothers touching. But this is All Sinners’ Day and Jin is an actor, someone with other clothing to dress around with. Of course, he only feels mildly strange to ask for this favour.

Except he has no fucks left or the need to care. After all, it’s better than telling Jin straight up that the only reason he’s still writing nowadays is because of the films that the other has been in.

And for Tomoki, well, he hasn’t been anyone else except for himself for this party that Parker wants him to go to.

“Who was your favourite character to play?” he finds himself asking Jin the next day.

“Why’re you asking that?”

“Call it nosiness,” Tomoki deflects easily. What he really wants to know is if he would even like being outside his own skin for a while. What better to figure out the hypothetical than to bother the sole actor that he knows?

Jin pauses, those red eyes unreadable but there’s that familiar glimmer. Because Tomoki may say the wrong things to most buns but to Jin? That’s almost never the case.

“I guess it’d be some sort of antagonist. Attempting to ruin the whole day for someone else can be particularly entertaining–”

“Which is why you should take out that costume, for Elio’s costume party.”

“I could. But I’m more curious about what you’d go as.”

There’s a beat. Tomoki doesn’t have a good answer for Jin, not really. Sure he’s written characters who go through different things but he wouldn’t dress up as any of them.

“That’s a good question.” Which in his words, is basically a way of saying ‘I don’t know’ and Jin knows this.

Except this time, Jin doesn’t let it slip through his hands unlike the other times in the past. Tomoki is guessing that this is going to be a long day.

“Since when do you have to wear this many frills?” he whines as he tugs at the frills on his sleeves. Jin only smiles, somehow it feels like he just walked himself right into a trap.

“I got it for fun, take a break from the hanfus that I usually wear,” Jin explains. “It’s a bit small on me though but it looks good on you.”

Ah.

Ah. So this is what this was all about this whole time.

It’s still better than whatever flirting ritual Tomoki would think up.

“Thank you,” he replies rather dumbly instead. Thanks, he hates communicating to some extent, or rather the idea of misreading what Jin could mean is something he’d rather not deal with.

Then:

“Then what are you planning on going as?” Tomoki blurts out.

Jin sighs. “Actually I’m not too sure. There are too many options and it’s still my first party like this.”

“We should match,” Tomoki proposes. He tries to keep the giddiness out of his voice.

His roommate grins. It’s everything he needs to know about how this will play out.

What he doesn’t expect is for Parker to show up as a lumberjack of all things. It’s– well it’s certainly different from the usual carpenter look. Yet at the same time, he still has the same energy as before. Tomoki wonders if he tried even at all.

“You guys actually came!” Parker shouts from the other side. “Welcome, welcome. Both of you look great though apparently Lucius also decided to show up–”

“I need to get out of the church,” the priest bun simply replies, deadpan. “This happens to be a good excuse.”

“Which is why–”

The priest looks nothing like a priest with a suit instead. Tomoki has no idea what he’s looking like unfortunately. Wearing a black suit doesn’t narrow anything down unfortunately and he’s more than a little lost.

“You’re dressed like a CEO?” Jin prompts. “That seems a bit out of your league.”

Parker cackles, smacking Lucius hard in the back. “See, I told you no one would know what you’re supposed to be.”

“I’m the most awful type of salesman you’ve ever met,” Luicus simply deadpans. “Buy my products!”

And Tomoki finds himself laughing. Everyone in his friend group certainly has a sense of humour, one that he’s quite grateful for. If anything, it’s even better that he’s playing a character rather than himself just to see what hijinks will play out from this.

It’s going to be a long night and he’s certain that he’ll love this. And so will Jin, if only to bitch about them later.
