Envy of the party

“A Costume Party?” Elvira nearly squeaked. It would be one of her first ones. The invitation came from the lovely Angora the girls had met up and made plans together. This weekend they were supposed to go visit an art museum together and she was so looking forward to it. The other end of the phone held a soft chuckle, a sound she was coming to enjoy.

“That’s right, a costume party. The museum curator reached out to a few others to arrange it. Wants the buns that decide to visit during All Sinner’s Day to dress up for the occasion, and become pieces of art themselves.”

Elvira thought about it for a few moments. “What kinds of things do you think other buns will be dressed as?” She listened as a few things were rattled off. Demons, witches, famous buns of the buns, even a note that a previous year someone dressed up as one of Hops drinks.

“Whatever you end up picking, I’m sure you’ll be the envy of the party. You are so cute.” Elvira’s face flushed at the compliment and she quickly agreed to find something to go as. Though on a whim she did think to ask what her lovely friend angora would be going as. “Me? Oh I’m just going to pull something old out of my closet for it. Nothing too fancy.”

With a smile they worked out a few more details before Elvira hung up. She flopped down on her bed, which caused Blossom to bounce upward a little, startling the imp slightly. “Sorry Blossom.” The imp came over and nudged the hoof that had been holding her phone. Elvira reached out and gave her a little pat. “I have no idea what I’m going to do.” And the meet up was tomorrow. Would she even have enough time to come up with something?

With a sigh Elvira got up and looked through her closet at all the dresses and outfits she had tucked in there. Changing into her doll form she plucked a few out, and held them up against herself so she could look in the mirror. Blossom slipped between her feet and scurried her way up onto an old box in the far bottom corner of the closet. Elvira gently plucked her up and moved her away. “Now now Blossom, you know better.”

Elvira flicked through several outfits, denying them all. Then she took time flipping through magazines for the shops nearby hoping to find some form of inspiration. Blossom once again fluttered her way over to the old box in the closet. The little imp started stubbornly pulling at the cardboard. “Blossom…” With a sigh Elvira got up once more, and gently tried to remove Blossom from the box, but the little imp held on. “Blossom let go. That’s not for you.” She was trying not to scrunch the imps' petal-like features.

Blossom refused to let go. In fact the little imp was all the more determined to hold tight. Finally Elvira grew cross and yanked the little imp from the box. However she did so at a bad angle and with such force, her eyes went wide as they toppled backwards. Her foot caught the box, kicking it somehow just as it had lifted a little so it went sailing upwards. Elvira yelped, clutching Blossom close to her and turning to the side so the imp wouldn’t get hit with anything in the box.

Leather and chains, and old jeans came tumbling out of the box, a few items stayed tucked inside. When everything had settled, Blossom wiggled her way out of Elvira’s grasp and appeared to be dancing around the items. Elvira sighed heavily. “Blossom I told you no.” Up on her knees she went to work, picking up an old pair of rough jeans with a chain still attached to it. She scooped up an old halter top, and fishnet covering that could go under or over. She paused with her hand on the old leather Jacket she had long since sworn off wearing again since she came to Burrowgatory. Staring at the old patch on the back of mischievous Imps, the lovely Angoras words rang again in her ears.

“Whatever you end up picking, I’m sure you’ll be the envy of the party. You are so cute.”

Elvira Jumped up. “That’s it!!!” Why hadn’t she thought of that before? She scrambled with all her old items, throwing the ones she had in hand onto the bed and picking up the box with the leftover bits and pieces. “Oh Blossom you’re a genius.”

Elvira spent the rest of the night making makeshift horns that might be believable. A good pair of Envy horns she could slip over her own. She also took her time rearranging the chains, fixing up the leather jacket to fit her better, and carefully adding little bits and pieces to sell the look. To think her hidden past would come in handy for a change. No doubt none of her friends would recognize her.

By the time the party rolled around at the art museum, hardly anyone was ignoring the shy little Elvira. Every bun and doll she passed, openly stared. Her leather heeled boots thunked quietly on the floor, her tail swayed out of worn jeans with chains hanging on their sides. She held her head high, the long braid of hair hanging over her shoulder to display the imps on the back of her leather jacket. Fishnet did nothing to hide her exposed midriff. Her chest barely kept modest by a halter top that was cut to hardly even fit.

Gone were the soft shades of makeup she usually wore. Instead deep red lipstick clung to her lips, and a smokey cat eye brought her golden colored eyes to life. Her bangs were haphazardly pinned up on one side by a little skull hair pin. She walked confidently past the stares, and found her lovely Angora with ease. At first, the Angora went to lean around her as though she were looking for someone else.

“I’m not late am I?” Elvira said gently.

That had the Angoras eyes snapping to meet hers. Elvira smiled, seeing she at least recognized her voice. She watched the other bun give her a long once over. Before she reached out to touch the faux envy horns. She lowered her head a little to make it easier, and it hid her eyes from view enough she could take in the sultry dress the Angora had on. Completely different from her usual attire. Though what her ‘costume’ was was lost on Elvira. Maybe she was just aiming sexy?

“You are not late at all, but my goodness I had no idea you could look so good in this aesthetic too. What happened to my cute little bun?”

‘My cute little bun’? Elvira’s cheeks flushed. “You said to dress up, so here I am.” She chimed, though a little less confidently than she was hoping to muster. The two of them went to grab some drinks before heading through the museum and enjoying the party itself. Demons, and gremlins, sexy nurses, and monsters, it was all so much fun.
